- I love history, encyclopedias, stories and knowledge sharing. My beloved father, relatives, teachers, colleagues, friends, barbers and taxi drivers told me interesting stories. I hope that my posts can supplement the history books and encyclopedias.
- I volunteered as a Docent for the CHM (Computer History Museum) for two years.
- I was a member of HMEE (History of Myanmar Engineering) projects. U Ohn Khine (M70) and I served as contributors and proofreaders. We compiled the CD Supplement for the HMEE Book published in 2012.

- I co-founded NorCal RIT AA and served as BOD (Board of Directors) member.
- I served as Vice President and BOD of TBSA (Theravada Buddhist Society of America). I was a Contributing Editor of Dhammanda Newsletter and the book “Paying Homage to Sayadaw U Silananda”. I was Master of Ceremonies at the Memorial Service for Sayadaw U Silananda.
- I belonged to several Toastmasters Clubs. I am a DTM (Distinguished Toastmater). I served as Club Coach, Mentor, Ambassador, Area Director, Contest Chair, Test Speaker and Judge.

- I have realized my dream of getting the Sayas and Alumni connected physically and electronically. I founded the RIT Alumni (International) Newsletter in April 1999. I served as Content Provider and Editor of the inaugural RIT website designed by U Khin Maung Zaw. They helped the implementation of SPZP-2000 in USA and subsequent SPZPs in Singapore and Yangon.

- My second Dream was to help History projects. I served as a member of the HMEE project. With U Ohn Khine (M70), I compiled the CD Supplement for the HMEE book published in 2012.

- My third dream was to celebrate Three Anniversaries in 2024 : (1) Centennial of Engineering Education in Burma / Myanmar (2) 60th Anniversary of RIT (Rangoon Institute of Technology (3) Silver Jubilee of RIT Newsletter. With the help of alumni volunteers, we were able to record memories of selected Sayas and publish them.
- My spouse, sayas and friends suggested that I should share my knowledge and experience while my physical and mental health are reasonably good. Several sayas, colleagues, classmates and some Junior alumni are GBNF (Gone But Not Forgotten).
Request
- It takes a lot of time to write, edit and organize posts into quality material that can be transformed into digital and printed books.
- I request the collaboration from SME (Subject Matter Experts) and volunteers who share my passion.

Notes by Hla Min :

Most have Cataracts removed from one or both eyes. A few had Full or Partial transplant of the Cornea. Some had Retina Tear repaired. Glaucoma and several other factors can cause impaired Vision.

Saya U Ba Toke played soccer and was active in the RU Sports Council. In his 70s and early 80s, Saya took weekly walks from his house to the Shwe Dagon pagoda. Aging gradually restricted Saya’s mobility, hearing and eye sight. Saya passed away on December 2, 2020 (the day following the RU Centennial), but a few days short of his Centennial Birthday.

When Saya U Moe Aung encountered problem with his knee during a trip to Upper Burma to attend Ah Hlu of a Khamee Khamet, he composed a poem on “Stationary & Movement” with philosophical musings about Life, Illness and Death. A surgery relieved Saya from the use of wheel chair, but as a high school goalkeeper he values Mobility, Agility & Strength.

Sayagadaw appreciated Saya U Moe Aung’s “Poem Gift” on her birthday.

Bagyee Myat Myo Myint gave “Pon Tu” of the then Marla Hall Thu as a birthday present for his beloved spouse.

Ko Aung Min (M69) used the term Vitamin F in an invitation to the 69er Annual Dinner and Entertainment.

Saya U Moe Aung wrote :

Actually, before suffering from knee pain, I had cataract removed from my left eye some 30 or so years back (couldn’t recall which year) and then from my right eye after a lapse of about 10 years. But, I was lucky, so to speak, that up till the present, haven’t yet encountered any problem whatsoever except the need to change the power lens for a better viewing focus.

I had right eye cornea transplantation 19 years ago, but unsuccessful .
Again cataract removal on left eye

5th Irrawaddy Literary Festival

Late October to Early November
- In late October 2019, I visited former classmates, colleagues & students in Singapore.
- Ko Zaw Tun (UCC) & Ma Kyu were our main hosts.
- Ko Ngwe Soe (Silver, UCC) & Ma Nu hosted us at their second home in Jahore. Silver took us to Melecca. Earlier he took us to Sentosa which was about to bring down the Lion Statue. He also wanted to jolt my memory of the “Myo Putt Ya Htar”.
- There were mini gatherings :
  69ers, M73 group with their Saya U Tu Myint, ex-UCC and ex-ICST.
- There were micro gatherings : Boe & Ma Phyu, Ma Pale & Ko Ye.
- Ko Zaw Tun & Ma Kyu offered Soon at their house in addition to regular ones at Singapore Chan Myay Monastery.
Early November
- In early November, we continued our trip. KK picked me up at Mingalardon airport and placed me at a hotel. He hosted two gatherings : speakers & coaches.
- We flew to Mandalay to attend the 5th Irrawaddy Literary Festival. I was a panelist at two sessions : one on Education and another on Poetry.
- During a break, Ko Thein Htut (UCC) took me on a quick trip around Sagaing & Mandalay
- Received autographed copy from Htein Win (Dat Pon). He had to wait a long time before he could publish his photos and articles about two Dark Moments in Burma : U Thant Ah Yay Ah Khin & 8-8-88.

- There were several gatherings back in Yangon in November and December, 2019.

- Jara and Byadi have caused a decline in health of sayas and alumni. Marana has claimed the lives of several especially during the pandemic.
- Some sayas and alumni are Gone But Not Forgotten. The GBNF list for 69ers has 137 members.
- With the event of social media, the number of RIT related pages grew. There are many silent readers and few active contributors.
Fact Checking
- Being a messenger is not easy.
- When an alumni asked me to relay the demise of U Ne Win Myint (Victor Win, ChE66), I double checked before posting the news. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Even then, someone who is near & dear to Jean (Mrs. Victor) claimed that Ko Victor was hospitalized, but had not passed away. The claim confused some alumni before the sad news was confirmed & details of the last journey were published.

- When Dr. Tin Hlaing, former Principal of Maritime Studies, passed away in Singapore, an alumni posted Condolence message in the Facebook pages to the family of Saya Dr. Tin Hlaing (M63). Saya became a Tone Kyaw.

- There are fact checking websites. They have reports about Urban Myths & Legends.
Concerns
- Some sayas & alumni want privacy. They do not want news of their visits or failing health to be relayed. We have to respect their concerns.
- There are many posts by sayas, alumni & friends. The posts may be public, restricted or private. We have to be careful before sharing or re-posting them.
- Most people do not have the time & energy to read long posts. A post should have an interesting & informative message.
- As my mentors said, “The message is usually much more important than the messenger.”

My Earlier Dream

SPZP-2000

Was to connect or re-connect Sayas, Colleagues & Friends physically and electronically.

We successfully organized the First RIT Alumni Reunion and Saya Pu Zaw Pwe in San Francisco, California in October 2000.

Six more World-wide Reunion and SPZP took place. Singapore in 2002, 2007 & 2010. Yangon in 2004, 2012 & 2016. Due to pandemic, SPZP-2020 was canceled.

Started RIT Alumni International Newsletter in April 1999.

Served as Content Provider & Editor for ex-RIT websites : first one by KMZ (UKhin Maung Zaw, now retired from Microsoft) and second one by Wunna Ko Ko (then at SAS).

Both ex-RIT websites are now inactive.

My Later Dream

Was to record Oral & Written History of our Alma Mater and our Beloved Land.

Set up hlamin.com (to archive old posts, add new posts and revise selected posts).

Requested SPZP-2000 Organizers, interested sayas & alumni to record gatherings.

Requested Subject Matter Experts & interested readers to review and enhance selected posts.

Background
- ဖေဖေ & အဖေ mean “Father”.
- Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June.
Three Generation of Fathers

My beloved father

My beloved parents

First Generation
- My beloved father
- He had NDE (Near Death Experience) in his teens. The doctors said that he had three months to live, but thanks to Kadok Sayagyi (ကတုတ်ဆရာကြီး၊ Indigenous Medicine Expert) he lived to be a father of seven and grandfather of eleven.
- He was a Jack of all Trades and Master of Some. He was not an Architect, but he built pagodas and houses (for him and his younger brothers).
- He passed away in his 80s.
- He would be 109 in July 2025.

- I am a former academic and Software Engineer.
- I have two sons and two grandchildren.

- He is an Industrial Engineer.
- He has a daughter & a son. Both are excellent in studies and extra-curricular activities.

Be kind to your father
For when you were young
Who loved you as fondly as he
He caught the first accent that fell from your tongue
And joined in the heavenly glee

Be kind to your father
For now he is old
His hair intermingled with grey
His footsteps are feeble — Once fearless and bold
Your father is passing away

Morals & Manners

We had to study “Morals & Manners” at St. Paul’s High School. Brother Austin rewarded those who could recite poems in the book.
