    Aung Thu Yein (SPHS63)

    Aung Thu Yein
    • Alias : A Nyo & Brownie Way
    • Younger brother of Dr. Thet Htar Way
    • Classmate at SPHS, I.Sc & RIT.

    ATY (Standing 2nd from right)

    St. Paul’s High School

    • Classmates in Std VIII(A), IX(A) and X(A).
    • In the lower classes, he was in Section (C). I was in Section (D).
    • Stood 13th in the whole of Burma in the Matric exam of 1963.
    • Won Collegiate Scholarship. Only 40 of the 100 scholarship awards were given to students from private schools.
    • SPHS had five in the Top Five, seven in the Top Ten, and ten in the top Twenty. Khin Maung U (1st), Min Oo (2nd), Myo San (Freddie, 3rd), Nyunt Wai (Victor, 4th), Thein Wai (5th), Hla Min (7th), Aung Kyaw Zaw (Johnny, 9th), Maung Maung Kyi (11th), Aung Thu Yein (Brownie, 13th), Khin Maung Zaw (Frank, 17th).
    • Has a soft heart.
    • Before the Matric exam, he read several subjects to Nyunt Wai (Victor), who was sick & could not study. Brownie could take credit for Victor’s success. Victor stood 4th in Burma & became medical professor in IM & Malaysia.

    Dr. Nyunt Wai wrote :

Being my best friend since standard IV, I could write volumes about him. For now only two points: (1) my friend was called “ANyo”(Brownie) because he had much darker complexion compared with his elder brother (very fair complexion); this contrast repeated in the case of his two sons; (2) the brown brothers passed away years ahead of their fairer counterparts.

    University Days

    • We attended the last ever I.Sc.(A) at Leik Khone in 1963. We took the Science Option.
    • After a long closure citing Security Concerns following the July 7th Anniversary, a new Education System was established in November 1964.
    • Admitted to the first ever 2nd BE at the Gyogone Campus.
    • Chose Electrical Engineering as Major & EC (Electrical Communications) as Option.
    EE69
    • Played Soccer and Tennis
    ATY 3
    • Learned to smoke — trying to fend off mosquitoes in the RIT rest rooms.
    • Learned social drinking from his classmates (e.g “Robert” Win Boh) after the last paper of the RIT final exam.

    After Graduation

    • One of 13 EC Graduates
    • Had a successful career at MOC/Schlumberger, & several foreign assignments.
    • Became a heavy smoker & drinker. Felt lonely after the loss of spouse & eldest son.
    • Had minor & not-so-minor health problems.
    • Quit drinking & smoking for some time, but he still felt the urge.

    Last Meeting (in March 2012)

    • I visited Yangon to take part in preparations for SPZP-2012 (scheduled for December).
    • Zaw Lai came to see me. We decided to surprise Brownie. He trusted people. He did not lock his house. He closed the gate & boarded Zaw Lai’s car.
    • Zaw Lai coaxed him to take a couple of drinks.
    • That dinner at Zaw Lai’s apartment would be remembered as Brownie’s farewell.
    • Brownie did not show up at the 69er breakfast gathering at Royal Rose. The gathering was cut short when we learned that Brownie was in ICU and that the 69er HCF organizers would go to see him.
    • Kyaw Zin took Win Lwin, Khin Maung Bo & me to the ICU. Brownie’s son, who is a medical doctor, said that Brownie was not ready for another operation. We left with samvegha that he could very well be No 61 (on Aung Min’s GBNF list). Win Lwin told me to meditate and also “do something for yourself”.
    • I spent several days at the Kaba Aye Sun Lun Gu Kyaung as a monk. Sayadaw U Wara (ChE70) was my preceptor.
    • During that period, Brownie remained unconsciousness and he finally succumbed.
    • My 69er friends notified Brownie’s demise to my siblings, but requested not to notify me at the monastery.
They did not want to disrupt my meditation practice.

May Brownie be able to share my merits.

Ah Hmya, ah hmya, ah hmya.

    Neikban Zaw
    • My spouse wrote articles for Dhammanda Newsletter ဓမ္မာနန္ဒစာစောင် with the pen name Neikban Zaw.
    • The newsletter was published by TBSA (Theravada Buddhist Society of America).

    Translation of my spouse’s article

In Burma, our beloved land, we treasure “Say Mee Toh” ဆေးမီးတို (Quick remedy). In fact, our forebears used easily available fruits, flowers, and leaves as traditional medicine. Some are taken raw, some are prepared according to a recipe.

    Doctor turned Patient

I did private practice at Barr Street (Maha Bandoola Pann Chan Lann မဟာဗန္ဓုလပန်းခြံလမ်း). There are several clinics and hospitals nearby. It is close to 35th Street which is frequently by the members of Yoke Shin Law Ka (ရုပ်ရှင်လောက Movie Community).

For a few months, I served as a doctor at the Waziya Pyazat Yone (ဝဇီရာပြဇာတ်ရုံ Theater for live performances). One day, I abruptly fell sick after being caught in the heavy rain. Thankfully, the Theater staff (who were my patients) gave me medicine. For a moment, the patients had treated their doctor. I will always remember and treasure their kind acts.

    Advice

Some doctors give medical advice to patients, but find it hard to take care of themselves. With sunglasses on, they will advice their patients to quit drinking and smoking and not to chew betel.

They may drink claiming for example that “a glass of wine is good for the blood circulation”. I did not refuse when iNapa Winery gave me a bottle of Premium Wine for my birthday.

    Mother and My In-laws

My mother passed away in August several years ago. She was 87. I still remember her preparing “Kun Ywet Pyoat Yay ကွမ်းရွက်ပြုတ်ရေ” for me.

My father-in-law who learned indigenous medicine from Kadok Sayagyi (ကတုတ်ဆရာကြီး his life saver) and my mother-in-law had a cabinet of Western and Eastern medicine. They also treated me at times.

    A million thanks.

    • The government wanted to quash the protests of the 7th July Anniversary.
    • Kamma probably decided that we should lose some more precious years of our lives and graduate 2.5 years later than those who were a year senior to us in High School.

    • Taking no chances, four from SPHS63 applied for State Scholarship.

    • Rimon, the elder son, became a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He led Rescue Teams.
    • Rimon perished in an avalanche. RAF notified Maung Maung Kyi & Khin May Than who were on the way to visit Myanmar. They received the sad news a short time after landing in Yangon. They had to hurry back to UK for their son’s last journey.
    • After that, he rarely spoke and smiled. Khin May Than painted and took walks twice a day to ease the aches and pains. They decided to move to Ogmore-by-the-sea.
    • Gave their old house to their second son, a medical doctor who had spent time in Japan and had come back to see the parents.

    Trip to England and Wales

    • In September 2017, we visited the UK. My previous visit was in 1972.
    • My cousin nephew Dr. Khin Tun (Peter, GBNF) and his spouse Daw Win Mar hosted us with sumptuous dinner almost every day. Both loved cooking. Also drove us to Southern Wales to visit Maung Maung Kyi and Khin May Than at Ogmore-by-the-sea

U Thein Han & Daw Khin Khin Htway

    April 23, 1958

It is on this day 23rd April 1958 that I got married to my wife Khin Khin Htway (Flora) at the Strand Hotel. We stayed two nights with her parents and left for our honeymoon to Tokyo, Japan.

    April 25, 1958

We arrived Tokyo 0n the 25th and was met at the airport by Mr Fonseka, Ceylon (now Siri Lanka) Ambassador to Japan. He was was a friend of my wife father when he was Ceylon Ambassador to Burma. He took us to a restaurant for lunch and later dropped us at a Hotel near the Imperial Palace.

    April 26, 1958

The next day we took the high speed bullet train to Osaka to visit Mr Fukutomi who is a friend and was once an IBM Engineer in Burma. He lived in Takarazuka, a suburb of Osaka. He took us to see the famous Takarazuka Kabuki show performed by women artists only, the men parts were also performed by ladies and not a single men was involved in it.

    Trips

We stayed one night in Osaka and then left for our trip to Kyoto, Nara,Yokohama, and Kamakura where there is a Huge BUDDHA sitting statue, it is also a popular beach resort and returned to Tokyo.

    Back to Tokyo

In Tokyo we saw a modern topless show at Asakusa Theatre, did some shopping at Diamaru Department store and took a stroll on GINZA street.

We left Japan after three weeks of our memorable honeymoon in Japan.

    Hong Kong

From Tokyo we flew to Hong Kong, we stayed at at the famous Peninsular Hotel on Kowloon side where the airport is.

One day while shopping in Hong Kong we met four Burmese gentlemen on the street and they were Executive Members of Rangoon Turf Club, they were in Hong Kong at the invitation of Hong Kong Turf Club. One of them, U Chit Khaing saw my wife in her longyi and came to talk to us, he then invited us for a cruise on the Hong Kong Harbour which the Hong Kong Turf Club had arranged for them in the evening. The cruise was during sunset and it was a beautiful ride relaxing on the boat, breathing the fresh air of Hong Kong Harbour and watching the colored lights of Skyscrapers opened one by one, twinkling on the hill. We returned to Rangoon the next day.

Blessed to be together for a long time

It is now more than six decades since our honeymoon in Japan and we are fortunate to be still together and is able to take care of each other.

For number of years, I was the carrier-cum-postman to bring Saya U Soe Paing’s typed golf news to the WPD, Working Peoples’ Daily at Theingbyu Street! Just one of the chores I had in those days.

I remember jokingly asked Sayadaw U Wara how he felt seeing the (18th??) hole over the fence from the Sunlun Kyaung’s “Thein”. The new golf course was built for VIPs inside Kabaaye, and that particular hole was seen from the “Thein” သိမ် less than 40-50 yards, of course over the fence.

Sayar U is my teacher- mentor who was just like a swan who laid a golden egg daily for me when I worked under him at RGH and DMR in 1970s. I never had a day that I did not learn a new lesson or knowledge from him when we were together.

Thank you Johnny (U Hla Min) for your kind portrayal, and to all who commented with support and friendship. I am so fortunate to have good friends throughout St. Paul’s HS and Medical School and also during post-graduate clinical work, and to have good students during my teaching years in IM (1), all of whom helped and supported me in many ways. With some time available in my retirement, I came upon an idea. As a service to medical education in Myanmar, I would post recently published medical articles (not readily available in Myanmar) that friends and colleagues in the medical profession may find useful or applicable to medical care or public health of people in Myanmar. In all these medical posts, I preceded with a simplified summary of the medical journal article so that non-medical persons who read these posts can also understand and be able to apply for their own health care. I hope this activity will provide useful medical or educational information to all who read my medical posts.
