Highlights

1963 – 64

  • Most attended the last ever I. Sc (A) classes with the Pure Science Option at the Intermediate Colleges.
  • We attended Leik Khone, which was an Intermediate College of Rangoon University.

1964 – 65

  • Under the then new Education System, Rangoon Institute of Technology (RIT) was opened on November 2, 1964.
  • Based on marks of I. Sc (A) exam, 300+ students were admitted to the first ever 2nd year B.E (Bachelor of Engineering) at RIT.
  • The 69ers are the Only Group that studied for 5 years successfully at the Engineering School.
  • My older brother matriculated in 1957, attended Yankin College, then First Year of Engineering at RU in 1959, and graduated with B. Sc. (Engg) from BIT in 1963.
  • In the old System, students had to study I. Sc (A) and I. Sc (B) before choosing their Discipline. See posts by Saya U Aung Khin, Saya Dr. San Hla Aung and Saya U Soe Paing.
  • Those who passed the exam had to choose a Major in 3rd BE. There were Eight Engineering Departments : Architecture; Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Mining and Textile Engineering

1965 – 68

  • In the Summer of 1965, Ko Sein Shwe (4th BE), Ko Hla Min (2nd BE), Ma Khin Than Myint Tin (2nd BE) and Ko Zaw Min (1st BE) were selected Luyechun for the Inlay Camp.
  • For 3rd BE, there were as 100+ students in Civil and Mechanical, about 80 in Electrical, and less than 25 in the remaining Disciplines. 7 students attended 3rd BArch.
  • Other 69ers who were selected Luyechun were Ko Thein Swe (for 3rd BE) and Ko Tin Myint (for 4th BE). Both are GBNF.
  • Electrical Engineering students had to choose EP (Electrical Power) or EC (Electrical Communication). Based on the Employment Data, the EE Department enforced a Quota system (roughly 3 : 1 for EP vs EC).
  • Mechanical Engineering students had to choose Agri (Agricultural Engineering), Auto (Automobile Engineering) or Mech (Mechanical Engineering). Agri and Auto were Sub-departments of Mech.
2nd BE

1968 – 69

  • Final Year B.E
  • Photo shows EE (Electrical Engineering) students with EC (Electrical Communication) & EP (Electrical Power) Options
  • There were 8 Engineering Departments : Architecture, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Mining & Textile

After Graduation

  • Some joined the Faculty. They include Taing Oke (ChE), Hla Myint (C), Hla Myint Thein (C), Htin Aung (C), Khin Maung Tint (C), Khin Maung Win (C), Nyi Hla Nge (C), Than Lwin (EE), Aung Myint (M), Khin Maung Tin (M), Ohn Maung / Mehm Aye Chan (M), Aung Myint (PP), Chit Htun (Min), Kyaw Tint (Min), Mu Mu Aye (T), Hla Shwe (T)
  • Several joined Government Departments and Corporations.
  • Some (e.g Yi Pinn) did Family Business.
  • A few left overseas.
EE69

1999

  • 30th Anniversary of Graduation

  • Hla Min founded “RIT Alumni Newsletter”. He later served as Content Provider and Chief Editor of the first ex-rit website designed by Ko Khin Maung Zaw / KMZ (EC76).
  • 69ers compiled and published a Contact List and a List of GBNF (Gone But Not Forgotten). The Organizers inadvertently placed Ko Han Sein (C69, POC) in the GBNF list making him a Tone Kyaw.

2000

  • Hla Min was an Organizer for SPZP-2000. He also served as Chief Editor of the SPZP Special pages and the Commemorative Newsletter.
