Thank you [HM and KMZ] for all the updates. I enjoy reading them and can feel the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants and the organizers. I wish I could be there for the REUNION and visit my old haunts in the Bay Area.

The least I can do is to contribute something about the Sayas who will be attending the SPZP-2000 Reunion. I would like to say something about Saya U Ba Toke and my friend Sayas Allen Htay and Ko Tin Maung Nyunt.

Saya U Ba Toke

U Ba Toke

I am very happy to hear that Saya U Ba Toke will be making the trip to the Bay Area. Saya U Ba Toke was our Math Saya in I.Sc.(A) at Yankin College in 1956 and I.Sc.(B) at Main University in 1957. He was a lecturer and Sayagyi U Kar who also taught us in 1957 was the Professor. He was a very good lecturer. I still cannot believe how he can write pages of notes on the
blackboard in a very nice handwriting. I think he became Professor of Mathematics in 1958 when U Kar retired. I remember that in 1958 we had to request him for recommendations to apply for places in universities in the States. He gave me a great recommendation for which I am still very grateful. I met him again when he joined RIT as the Professor of Mathematics before I moved to UCC. The last time I saw him was some months back at the funeral of the father-in-law of Dr. Khin Maung Win (Met) and the father of Khin Than Nwe (T62).

Allen Htay

Allen Htay

Allen Htay was a brand new Saya when we joined the Engineering College in Leik Khone in 1958. I remember him teaching Engineering Drawing to the Chemical & Textile first year students like Khin Than Nwe (T62) and my high school friend Richard Than Se (ChE62). I met him again in August 1963 when we took the same ship SS Warickshire from Liverpool on the way back home.

Ko Tin Maung Nyunt, Ko Ko Lay (UCC, GBNF), and Ko Than Pe (Chartered Accountant, ADB) were also on the ship. We spent about two months on the ship with about 4 weeks in Colombo. We played ping pong [table tennis] and swam in the pool during the day. We played Bridge [card game] every night after dinner with Ko Tin Maung Nyunt and Ko Ko Lay as partners and myself partnering either Allen Htay or Ko Than Pe. We went on land at Port Said (at the start of the Suez Canal), Port Sudan and Aden in the Red Sea, and Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Elyia in Sri Lanka. All of us became very good friends.

On arrival home in 1963 Allen Htay rejoined RIT in Gyogone. I was then assigned to the RIT Electrical Engineering Department in January 1964. We were together again when Ko Tin Maung Nyunt joined the Agricultural Engineering Department some months later. Ko Tin Maung Nyunt was one of our regulars on the Saya Football Team. We remained good friends as all of us stayed in the RIT estate. Ko Tin Maung Nyunt then left for the US via Thailand. I joined the UCC in 1971. Allen Htay then left for the US. The last time all of us got together was in 1988 in the Bay Area.

I am also glad to hear that my old colleagues from the EE Dept Ko Sann Tint (another Saya Football Team regular) and Ko Sein Maung will be attending the reunion. Please pass on my best regards to my Sayas, colleagues, friends, students and all participants.

During my visits to Yangon, I paid respect to U Ba Toke. Sayagyi is a Phwa Bet of Rangoon University and the First RU Students’ Strike in December, 1920.

- U Myint Sein (Principal of BARB, GBNF) requested me to develop computer programs for Veda.
- I supervised the Veda projects by Ko Win Latt and Ko Zaw Tun.
Myint Sein
- Ko Win Latt wrote Win Horo. The lowest version was used to generate natal horoscope. The higher versions were used by BARB sayas for advanced astrological calculations.
- Ko Zaw Tun wrote a Prolog program for evaluating the Zartars. He was surprised when the zartar of a young (may be 2 year old) resulted in the prediction of a very person. He later learned that the child was a recipient of wealth from his Sawbwa grand father.
- After receiving their M.Sc.(Computer Science), both taught computing at their private schools. They later moved overseas.
- During my initial visit to Singapore, I stayed at Ko Win Latt’s apartment. He later spent in time in Bangkok and Yangon.
- During my later visits, Ko Zaw Tun and Ma Kyu hosted us. They also organized ex-UCC gatherings.
Khin Maung Zaw (KMZ)

KMZ
- Attended St. Paul’s High School. In 1965, SPHS was nationalized and became No. (6) Botathaung State High School. He matriculated in 1970.
- Joined RIT and graduated with Electrical Communication.
  The option is known as EC, EcE & Electronics Engineering. Due to school closure, there were two convocations in 1977. Those from March 77 are called “Class of 76” (the intended year of graduation).
- Played Hockey for “All Institutes” team.
- Rowed for RIT at RUBC.
- Spent a few years at UCC before moving to Singapore and then USA.
- In 1999, he designed and implemented the first ex-RIT web site & served as its webmaster.

KJ, thanks much for posting these old stories, sharing with the rest. We really had many interesting and amazing characters there in those days. We, the three so-called musketeers, made things much more interesting, pushed the envelope so to speak. But thanks to all the Sayas – Saya Paing, Saya Myo, Saya Lay and seniors like you, UTAG etc, we were able to do whatever we felt like it there. In my days in UCC, U TAG was CE and ICL computer’s printer was line printer and it could print only 120 char/line. To get 160 char/line, UTAG modified the line printer by joining the original plastic printer shaft with another short shaft. One day, he came to the engineering workshop and said he would modify it. First he cleaned the desk workplace where he would join the shafts. At that time, an apprentice engineer (Ko Khin Maung) came into the room and saw U TAG cleaning the desk. Then, KKM, shouted, “Whoo! .. actually modification of printer is just Cleaning the desk”.

- Senior monk or the Chief resident monk of a monastery. Often used together with “U”. e.g Sayadaw U Sobhana
- A distinguished sayadaw may be referred to as Sayadawgyi as a sign of reverence.
- The terms “sayadaw” and “sayadawgyi” originally corresponded to the senior monks who taught the former Burmese kings. They may be influential teachers of the Buddhist Dhamma and also outstanding meditation practitioners. Tag may mean a label.

In FB, tagging a post makes a copy to the Timeline of the person being tagged.

There are pros and cons for using FB tags. e.g. Someone may receive multiple of a post that is being revised incrementally.

In FB, the individuals in a photo may be tagged. There are pros and cons for using FB photo tags.

Some algorithms used by FB to process photo tags have features. e.g. I have a photo with U Osadha of Dhammananda Vihara. FB asked me to tag Ashin Pannagavesaka (Uzin Bobby Myo Tun, A69) even though he was not present in the picture. The algorithms do not handle the case correctly for Theravada Buddhist monks.

In the early days, there is game called “Tag”.

There used to be Rag Tag Bands.

TAG – Technology and Architectures Group

The last group I worked in my first company. Took me 10 years in that company to get into that group, starting from the very bottom when I arrived in US. The very first year in US, every interviewer told me I would get bored in several months in the job I interviewed for. Some of them even referred me to outside Agencies.

This first company was and still is, a retail company, where technology and IT were treated as second class citizen. Even worth the new retechnoligies we tried to push out, the higher ups were not enthusiastic about it. They see IT being the money spending “Cost Center” not a “Revenue Generating” aka merchandise selling department.

After they pushed out long time VP of IT was transferred to newly created online entity website, TAG was abolished. I was in the middle of another technologies, Data Warehouse/Data Mart and Internet, got transferred into Database group.

IBM, having deep connections to our IT, we were running Big Blue, like any other big IT shops. IBM got a foot hold to sell their web/internet technologies. I was in the minority of IBM’s internet products (1997/1998), and was pushed aside. It didn’t work out well so Microsoft’s Professional Services was brought in. My former VP asked me to come to his new department, but I got pushed aside again because Microsoft folks complained that I asked them too many questions.

That was the end of my career with the retail company.

On the morning of October 5, 2000, Ivan called me and asked how he can support the “RIT Alumni International” Activities. He earlier donated $360 to cover the hard costs of running the http:/www.ex-rit.org web site for a year.

He had written a check of $1200. He would donate $1000 to the SPZP and $200 to the Alumni General Fund. When I thanked him, he said,

“I’m not donating to your pocket. I’m donating for a good cause. The time you’ve put in definitely much more than $1200. I want you guys to set up a formal organization and a permanent fund”.

He became a Golden Sponsor for SPZP-2000. There were five Golden Sponsors:

Study & Work

I have been staying at East Brunswick, New Jersey, USA for a long time. EB is a small nice town between New York City (40 miles south) and Philadelphia (60 miles).

I got my MIME in 1976 from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, New York City. I hold both New York State and New Jersey State Professional Engineering (PE) licenses.

Back in 1974, I worked as a nuclear engineer in a Nuclear Power Plant. By 1982, I was working as a senior mechanical engineer at the major chemical/petrochemical plants. I performed planning, scheduling, design, specification, procurement, construction management, client interfacing, trouble shooting, etc. —

In 1988. I purchased the engineering and construction firm where I was chief engineer and operation manager.

In 1992 I purchased a garden apartment with 46 units and established a realty company.

In 1996 I purchased a co-generation power plant which produces power and steam/hot water to the hospitals, but this one was not doing great, so I gave up within two years.

I slowed down my engineering and construction business in 1998. The only business I am working part time is the real estate business. I own two office buildings and two single family houses. I have a beach house at the NJ shore and spend most summer there.

I have two adult daughters. The elder one graduated from Cornell University with Mechanical Engineering Degree and is working as a financial institution at Wall Street in NYC. The younger one graduated from an artist college and is doing photo for Amazon website advertisement in New York City. My wife is from Burma as well. We never returned there, since we immigrated.

I spend my time purchasing/selling stocks daily, managing the real estate business and playing Bridge [a card game]. That is my hobby. I am a Bronze Life Master in ACBL (American Contract Bridge League).

That is my life. I would like to add one more thing. When my wife and I came to USA, all we had was $60 plus $1200 air tickets loan from Pan Am.

Most of our classmates and friends are smart, intelligent, and willing to work. But a few have business mind to motivate or establish their wealth. I will talk with you more if you are interested.

Talking about donation : last year, I proposed to the Myanmar Ambassador in Washington, DC, to donate my engineering documents, books, technical catalogs, etc to Myanmar. The offer was not accepted.

Does RIT have email address? I’d like to email to the staff of RIT. I like to say “Hello” to Naw Mu Mu Aye (T69). I heard she is the Head of Textile Department at RIT.

His Philosophy

In another e-mail, Ivan wrote :

I have helped at least 75 relatives people immigrate to USA. I have sponsored at least 200 relatives, classmate, friends to USA without spending a penny to the lawyer. I had provided air tickets fees, lodging facilities, food, and transportation. I also helped most of them look for suitable jobs for most of them. I also arranged their children to go to school. This is not an easy assignment, need a huge heart to do that. My wife is of tremendous help in doing these projects. It took us more than 10 years on a consistent basis to do the projects.

I donated about $1,000,000 to my childhood school via Ko Aung Myint back in 1991/92. The school has 1000 students. They have named their assembly hall after me.

The message I’d like to offer is “When you are available, you should be able to contribute your assets (including knowledge, money, personal involvement) back to the society”.

U Ba Than 1
- My saya at RIT. He taught Mechanical Drawing and Strength of Materials.
- Gave me rides to RIT in his white Zephyr. Several thought I was his nephew.
- My cousin. His father is my mom’s elder brother. His mother is my dad’s elder sister.
- Had many photo albums. He would show them to me and former students.
- Several years ago, he has a Stroke. His family members hired nurses & assistants to speed up his recuperation.
- His son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren provided him with tender, loving care.
- His physical and mental health declined in his 90s.
- He passed away peacefully after his 94th birthday.

- Around 2019, he had medical problems. He could not travel far, but continued conducting his business & philanthropy from home.
- Multiple projects to implement (including writing books), but he finally succumbed to Jara, Byadi & Marana.

U Tin U, Daw Khin Swe Aye (Emily), Daw Myint Myint Khaing at SPZP
- U Tin U matriculated in 1946. He received BSCE from the University of Oregon and MSCE from Yale University. Upon his return, he taught part-time at the Civil Engineering Department at the RU Faculty of Engineering, University of Rangoon. He is the most Senior Past Captain of RUBC. He is the oldest of nine siblings. Two younger brothers Saya U Ba Than (Gold Medalist in 1948) and Dr. Myo Tint (3rd in Burma in 1952 Matric exam) have passed away.

- Daw Khin Swe Aye graduated with Physics Honors in 1962 along with Daw May Than Nwe (GBNF) and my elder sister Daw Khin Than Nwe. Sad to learn that she had vision impairment.
- Daw Myint Myint Khaing is the daughter of Arzani Mahn Ba Khaing. She transcribed the interview tapes recorded by her spouse Saya Dr. Khin Maung Swe (Tekkatho Maung Thin Char, GBNF) for the book on Sayagyi U Ba Toke and his life journey. Sayagyi gave autographed copies of the book to U Ohn Khine and me. Sayagyi is a Phwa Bet Taw of Rangoon University and the First RU Students’ Strike in 1920. Sayagyi passed away on 2nd December 2020 (a few days short of his Centennial birthday).

Dreams

Jules Verne

He dreamed of traveling
- to the Moon and back
- in a hot air balloon
- in a submarine 20000 leagues under the sea
- to the center of the earth
- around the world in 80 days (a remarkable feat for his time)
He inspired people to transform most of his dreams into reality.

Apollo
- In his book, Jules Verne sent three men from a Cape in Florida to orbit the moon, return safely to earth. He used a powerful cannon to achieve the velocity to escape the earth’s atmosphere.
- A century later — in December 1968 — Apollo 8 with Frank Borman, James Lovell and Bill Anders made Verne’s dream a reality. The space ship was launched from Cape Canaveral (later renamed Cape Kennedy), which is within striking distance of the spot chosen by Jules Verne.
- In July 1969, Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin landed in Tranquility Bay on the Moon.
- When President John F. Kennedy proclaimed, “Before this decade is out, we will send men to the moon and then bring them back safely to earth”, there was no substantial plan to support his dream.
- Verner von Braun, a German rocket scientist (who was captured by the Allied Forces as a Prisoner of War), and his team were given a “level of trust” to work on the NASA project.
- It would need baby steps : Mercury, Gemini and Apollo projects to have one, two and three astronauts to man the space ships.
- For the Apollo project, it was not clear how to implement the important phase of bringing the astronauts safely back to the earth. e.g. How can a direct hit to the moon cause a safe return to earth?
- Folklore said that one engineer scribbled on his lunch bag a “spider” landing on the moon and returning. His dream resulted in the design of the “Lunar Module”. The rest is history.

My dream two decades ago
- I dreamed that I would be able to get the sayas and alumni get reconnected electronically and physically.
- In 1999, we established the RIT Alumni Newsletter and the RIT web site (with the expertise of U Khin Maung Zaw (KMZ, EC76, web master)).
- In October 2000, with the help of sponsors and volunteers, the First RIT Grand Reunion and Saya Pu Zaw Pwe was held in San Francisco, California, USA.
SPZP-2000 Organizers
- Seven SPZPs (Saya Pu Zaw Pwe’s) have been held : SPZP-2000 (in the US), SPZP-2002 (in Singapore), SPZP-2004 (in Yangon), SPZP-2007 and SPZP-2010 (in Singapore), SPZP-2012 and SPZP-2016 (in Yangon). Due to pandemic, SPZP-2000 was canceled.
My recent dream

My recent dream was to get as many contributors and volunteers to compile an informal story of
- Our beloved land
- Our ancestors
- Our mentors
- Pioneers and prime movers (e.g. those who helped build the “Rice Bowl of Asia”)
- Laggards and culprits (e.g. those who dragged Burma into the Least Developing Country status)
- Unsung heroes (e.g. who tried to overcome the “Adhamma Era” and rebuild the nation into former glory)

Dreaming and creating inspiration for others to be able to fulfill your dreams are two different animals, if you will, by themselves.

I, like many others, have dreams but we do not have your dedication. perseverance and drive to inspire others.

As I have said many times here, my hats off to you, I am very proud to be considered your friend, and informal pupil.

And to your significant other to take care of you/look after you and your sons while you would be deep into these projects. Please convey my regards to Ma Sein Yie.

Oral and Written History
- There were some Sayas that were over 90. H Num Kok (C), U Soe Khaw (Mining), U Ba Toke (Maths), U Min Wun (C) and U Ba Than (M) have passed away.
- The leading Thet Kyee sayas include U Tin U (C), U Aung Khin (M), Dr. Aung Gyi (Rector, C) and U Myo Myint Sein (A).
- Many of our sayas are in their 80s.
- While they still have high energy and keen memory, we need volunteers to either formally interview them or to record the conversations.
- They can become the artifacts of the Oral History section of an engineering library (preferably the YTU Library).
- There can also be a section to archive the Written History.
H Num Kok (GBNF)

- He taught Engineering Drawing to Dr. Aung Gyi and U Min Wun.
- He taught Soil Mechanics to the younger Sayas.
- He served as President of the RIT Track & Field Association with U Khin Maung Lay (Henry, T68) as Secretary and U Myo Nyunt (C69) as Joint Secretary.
- He served as Line Judge at the RUBC Regattas along with Saya U Sein Win (GBNF) and Saya Dr. San Hla Aung.
- He was loved by his former students. They showed up at the Welcome Party in Yangon for Saya a few years ago. Saya took home the banner of the event to his home in Portland, Oregon, USA.
- He worked full-time until he turned 80.
- He was reasonably healthy in his early 90s.
- He passed away at the age of 98.
U Soe Khaw (GBNF)

U Soe Khaw
- He was Part-time Lecturer & Head of Mining Engineering at BOC College.
- U Soon Sein succeeded him as full-time saya and Head of the Department.
- He worked for the Ministry of Mining before heading out for overseas assignment.
- After retirement from the United Nations, he migrated to the USA.
- He was actively involved in selected monasteries in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Saya Allen Htay (C58, GBNF), Saya Dr. San Lin (C62) and I had a Lunch gathering with him. The gathering ended near to a Dinner gathering. The three sayas shared their memories.
- He was healthy physically and mentally before his beloved spouse’s demise.
- A few years later, he passed away.
- He is a cousin of Dr. Htut Saing (Harry, Past Captain and Gold of RUBC, GBNF).

- He is a Phwa Bet Taw of the University of Rangoon and the First RU Students’ Strike in December 1920.
Book
- His life journey had been recorded and published by his former student Saya Dr. Khin Maung Swe (Maung Thin Char) with the help of Sayama Daw Myint Myint Khine (daughter of Arzani Mahn Ba Khine).
- During my visits to Yangon, I paid respect to Saya. He gave me autographed copy of the book.
- He was an athlete. He played soccer in his younger days. He headed the Burmese team to Tokyo Olympics.
- He used to walk every weekend with his younger Dhamma friends to Shwe Dagon Pagoda.
- At the subsequent visits, I found the decline of his health but not his mental acumen.
- Saya passed away on December 2, 2020 the day after the RU Centennial, and several days short of his birthday on December 26.

U Tin U
- He gave an interview for HMEE-2012 Project.
- When the Rangoon University reopened in 1946 (after the war), he attended RU along with Dr. Pe Nyun & Dr. Pe Thein.
- Most of his former classmates are GBNF.
- He is the Oldest & Most Senior Past Captain of RUBC.
- He represented RUBC in the 1948 Independence Day Regatta at Kandawgyi along with Dr. Pe Nyun, Dr. Pe Thein & U Khin Maung Wint.
- He opened the RUBC Centennial Celebrations in December 2023.
- He is Past Captain of Rangoon Golf Club. He played golf until his early 80s.
- He still enjoys the evenings sitting in the lawn and enjoying Scotch Whiskey.

- He passed away in early 2024.
- His elder brother Saya U Tin U (96 years) is still strong and active.
- Some thought that their longevity is due to their genes. Sadly, their father passed away in his 60s after raising nine successful sons and daughters.
- Until a period before his demise, Saya remembered most of his former students well.
- Several students have seen his photo albums. Many photos were given to MES for display and to HMEE (History of Myanmar Engineering Education) for display in the book and the supplemental CD.
- He is a proud sponsor of the History project along with U Soe Paing (EE, UCC) and U Thaw Kaung (former Chief Librarian of the Rangoon University Central Library).
- He donated almost all of the Garawa money that he received from the SPZPs and his former students.

- He still plays Tennis & Golf.
- He does not want to fly long distances.
- He is spending quality time with his children and grand children.

- Dr. Aung Gyi is healthy except for some hearing loss. He attended most SPZPs and Reunions held in the USA, Singapore and Myanmar. He wrote several articles for the RIT Alumni International Newsletter.
- Dr. Aung Gyi, U Min Wun (GBNF) and U Maung Maung Than (GBNF) were the initial group of Engineering students sent to study at the prestigious Universities in the USA under the “Twinning Program”.
- For some time, U Min Wun (GBNF) could not travel far as he has to take care of his beloved spouse with some health problems. His former students from Myanmar paid respect to Saya in Los Angeles. They also brought Garawa money from the various Civil gatherings in Myanmar. Sadly, he passed away a year ago.
- U Maung Maung Than (GBNF) served as Chair of the RIT Sports Council during our days. He played Chinlon. He is also a musician.
HMEE Projects
- For the HMEE-2012 Project, we requested the former Heads of the Engineering Departments to write about the history of their departments. The book was published in December 2012.

- The HMEE-2018 Project was established to revise the book published by HMEE-2012 and to provide additional material for the planned two-volume book. However, it did not run into completion partly because of the demise of Saya U Aung Hla Tun and partly because of the calamities.
Sense of urgency
- Several sayas have passed away and some sayas have declining physical and mental heath.
- We sense that the window for having a comprehensive Written History and Oral History is shrinking.
- There is still some time to learn from our sayas and their contemporaries about the different facets of Myanmar Engineering Education.
- Their stories can become gems for the Archives.
- MEC, MES and RIT Alumni Association can help with the project.

Encyclopedia of Asian American Folklore and Folklife

- Nine of my articles appear in the Encyclopedia.
- The three-volume book was published by ABC-CLIO in 2011. The book was sold for $275.
- I received a book for completing eight articles according to the agreement and $10 (for the additional article).
- Burmese Americans are covered in Pages 127 to 178 of Volume One.
- The Editors decided to merge two of my articles with other authors. Unfortunately, an error introduced by my co-author. On page 150, he mentioned July 22 (instead of July 19) as Martyrs’ Day. The merged article unfortunately was not sent to me for review. The Editors promise to correct the error in subsequent editions.
- Folk tales (as told by Saya Dr. Htin Aung and Ludu U Hla) are part of the Folklore.

Blog

Diary, journal, log, and blog (web log) are ways and means to record one’s experience and thoughts.

Blogging is fun. One can just write down one’s thoughts without caring for academic integrity or historical precision. One does not have to write comprehensive reports. Several readers (mostly SMEs or Subject Matter Experts) point out errors (typos, discrepancies).

Not all media and social media are created equal. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, Facebook is a great way to get connected and reconnected (with long lost friends), but it requires time and energy to navigate the “rolling” and “revolving” posts.

I blog in my Facebook page and then share it with one or more FB pages (mainly “RIT Update”). As time and energy permit, I archive the posts along with the relevant feedback to

I need volunteers to realize my dream and wishes (of an amateur historian, story teller and life long learner) before my reasonably good memory starts to fade away.
