  • U Thein Lwin (EE)

    Saya U Thein Lwin (GBNF) received his BSEE and MSEE from Lehigh University.

    He taught at RIT and Singapore Polytechnic.

    He is the older brother of U Myo Myint (ChE), U Kyi Lwin (George, C), U Tint Lwin (Daniel, M), U Thet Lwin (Henry, EE).

    Gathering in Singapore

    His spouse Daw May Than Nwe (Joyce, GBNF) was Top in Physics Honors Class of 1962 and taught at RIT.

    Both passed away in Singapore within a few months of each other.

  • U Khin Aung Kyi

    Saya U Khin Aung Kyi stood 7th in Burma in the Matriculation of 1949 and won Collegiate Scholarship.

    He was a Mechanical Engineering student at RU when he won States Scholarship to study BS and MS in Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    RU offered early ChE courses with the help of contract sayas (mostly from India).

    Upon his return, he served as Lecturer and Head of Department. He later became Professor.

    He succeeded Dr. Aung Gyi as RIT Rector in 1977. He served until 1988.

    He taught at Rengsit University in Bangkok.

    He attended SPZP-2000 with the sponsorship of his former students.

    At one SYPZP he said in his speech that he calls his wife Honey. that’s why he’s healthy. at the end while going back Saya U Hla Myint Thein shouted, “am calling my wife Honey when I get home”.

    U Aung Moung (M73) was a volunteer for HMEE, SDYF and SPZP.

    He also helped Saya U Ba Than.

    He had a medical problem.

    He also volunteered at selected monasteries. Several monks made their transportation arrangement to attend his last journey at Yay Way.

  • U Soe Myint (M72)

    UCC

    He joined UCC as Computer Operator. He attended DAC.

    He later had training in USA to study Computer Graphics and applications.

    He taught Drawing and AutoCAD at ICST.

    He retired as Pro-Rector of ICST.

    Nickname

    His nickname was Phone Gyi. He was a temporary monk several times, but did not become a permanent Phone Gyi.

    He met his love Daw Yin Kywe who attended Computer Courses at UCC.

    He volunteered at the Kaba Aye Sun Lun Gu Kyaung.

    His father U Thein Nyunt (GBNF, former Secretary of Religious Affairs) & the family members had supported Sayadaw U Vinaya and his meditation retreats from the early days.

    One day, he visited the monastery twice. He forgot to bring his Garawa offerings and went back to pick them up.

    He also visited his nephew and niece who had medical problems.

    Around 3 AM, he passed away unexpectedly.

    • She and U Maung Maung Kyi retired to a new home at Ogmore-by-the sea.
    • She hikes and paints.

  • U Tin Hlaing (M59)

    He joined Mechanical Engineering Department as Assistant Lecturer.

    He received MS from Purdue University.

    He was promoted to Lecturer.

    He headed Agricultural Engineering Department (sub-department of Mechanical Engineering Department).

    He played Tennis and Soccer, and managed the All Universities & Institutes Hockey Team.

    He had kidney problem, but could not access to the two rare Dialysis Machines at BMH. He could not get passport & visa in time to have medical treatment overseas.

    He is GBNF.

    He was from the Third Batch of Architects from Rangoon University along with U Aung Kyee Myint and U Tin Htoon.

    Artist

    He is an exponent of Modern Art. He and his fellow artists (U Paw Oo Thet, Director Win Pe) exhibited and sold their paintings.

    Movie Director

    He also directed two movies.

    The first movie Hna Ma Let Shawt Nay Le Dawt was controversial for its presentation. It set a record as the movie with no Full House for the First Day First Show. Some foreigners showed interest and supposedly tried to buy the film.

    U Tun Aung (EP70) volunteered as an assistant for the second movie. It was produced by Daw Khin Marlar (spouse of Collegian Nay Win).

  • U Bo Gyi (A59)

    He was from the Second Batch of Architects from Rangoon University along with Saya Dr. Lwin Aung.

    He helped Saya Mr. Nagel with the design of Recreation Center at Rangoon University.

    He was a pianist and expert modeler.

    Architects Incorporated

    He co-founded Architects Incorporated with U Aung Kyee Myint (A60) and U Tin Htoon (A60). Their office was frequented by U Kin Maung Yin (A60), U Paw Oo Thet, Director Win Pe and their friends (mostly artists).

    The Three Amigos later closed AI and joined PWD.

    He designed the Mausoleum for Daw Khin Kyi but was not appreciated by his bosses.

    Post-retirement

    He retired and became a monk.

    He is now GBNF.

    He was my classmate at St. Paul’s High School, Leik Khone and RIT.

    He was called Brownie (Mg Nyo) for his skin complexion.

    He stood 13th in Burma in the Matriculation of 1963 and won Collegiate Scholarship.

    He did not smoke or drink.

    He played Tennis and Soccer for his Block.

    Inter-Hall Soccer

    He started smoking to fend off mosquitos.

    He started drinking to enjoy the end of exams.

    Both habits later caused health problems.

    He worked for MOC and Schlumberger.

    Mini-gathering in Yangon

    During my visit to Yangon, Zau Lai (EP69)!picked me up and we decided to go and see Brownie (at his house near A1 Compound). To our surprise and delight, Brownie did not change clothes or close his gate but jumped on the car.

    Per his doctor’s advice, he had quit smoking and drinking.

    Zaw Lai hosted a party at his Yangon apartment, coaxed Brownie to have some drinks and gave him a bottle (to take back home). Ko Thein Swe (EP69, GBNF) and Sa Maung Maung (EP68) were present at the mini-gathering.

    Breakfast Gathering

    The monthly Breakfast Gathering at Royal Rose was solemn. Ko Kyaw Zin (EP69) offered to take us to the Neurology Ward in RGH to see Brownie, who had fallen in the shower room at his house.

    Final remarks

    I spent a few days as a temporary monk at Kaba Aye Sun Lun Gu Kyaung.

    69ers did not inform me of Brownie’s demise so that my medication practice would not be interrupted.
