Kyet Taw is one of the famous nick names.

• Khin Maung Lwin (“Kyet Taw”) — Past General Secretary of RIT-YIT-YTU Alumni Association; Core organizer of the Combined Class of 87 and 91. (There is no convocation for 1988, 1989 and 1990); Was active in 8888 movement.

• Harry Taw (“Kyet Taw”, MEHS57) moved to Southern California.

• Dr. Nyan Taw (“Kyet Taw”, Dicky, SPHS63) — RUBC Gold; Doctorate in Marine Biology; Worked for Pearl and Fishery Corporation before moving abroad for UN and Private Sector assignments (e.g. raising Prawns); His mother is credited with helping Bogyoke Aung San evade the heels of the Police

To differentiate people with the same name, qualifiers — prefixes and suffixes — are used.

Some in the government service has a serial number as the suffix. e.g. U Maung Maung (6)

One singer called himself “Twante Thein Tan”. Another had a bigger name “Myanmar Pyay Thein Tan.”

U Zaw Min (EP70) decided to have a career change and a name change after he arrived in the USA. He is now known as Zaw Min Nawaday or Zaw Nawaday.

Some did not know why Saya U Thein Aung (Met72) was called “Myodaw Thein Aung”. They were not aware of the Zat Mintha.

One wonders if having long names would resolve the name conflict. e.g. Cartoon character named Khin Maung Thet Cho Oo.
What happens if a name is too long to spell or pronounce?

• My boss was named Surapol Dasananda, but most called him “Dr. Das”.
• My colleague was named Suttipong Kanakakorn, but most called him “Nick”.

Inya is the name of

• a lake : Inya Lake

  It has an entrance to the Main Campus of Rangoon University

Inya Saung / Inya Hall

Daw Su Su was the first occupant of Room No. (1) at Inya Hall.

She danced three roles in the fund raiser for the Tekkatho Dhammayone. The director of the play was her cousin brother Saya U Lu Pe Win (Pali and Kyauksar Scholar). The rehearsal was assisted by U Nyi Bu (First male actor in a Burmese movie, Brother of A1 U Tin Nwe, U Maung Maung Soe and A1 U Tin Maung).

Daw Su Su was honored at the Thet Kyee Pu Zaw Pwe (Paying homage to the elders) held at the Tekkatho Dhammayone. Her account was published in the Golden Jubilee Sar Saung of Inya Hall.

She has three daughters :

Saya U Soe Paing (SPHS56)

• Stood 17th in the whole of Burma in Matriculation examination of 1956; Won Collegiate Scholarship
• Received BSEE and MSEE from Stanford University
• Joined the RIT EE Department as Assistant Lecturer.
• Co-founded UCC with Dr. Chit Swe, U Myo Min and U Ko Ko Lay
• Transferred to UCC as Systems Manager of Systems Division
• Received M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Southampton University
• Worked for UN projects in several countries.
• Wrote “Computer Ah Sa UCC Ga” and his experiences as a States Scholar and UN Advisor.
• Spent time playing golf and practicing vipassana meditation.
• During his UCC days, he served as a Golf Correspondent.
  I helped him type about the competition at RGC and BGC and submit to the English newspapers.

U Win Paing (SPHS64, GBNF)

• Won several Golf Championships with his younger brother U Kyaw Paing.
• After finishing the finals for Chemical Engineering examination in 1970, he became U Wara.
• Served as Taik Oke for more than four decades.
• Succeeded Sayadaw U Vinaya as the Chief Resident Monk of KabaAye Sunlun Gu Kyaung.

U Kyaw Paing (SPHS67)

• Represented Burma in the Putra Cup.
• Lawyer and Entrepreneur.

For number of years, I was the carrier-cum-postman to bring Saya Paing’s typed golf news to the WPD, Working Peoples’ Daily at Theingbyu Street! Just one of the chores I had in those days.
I remember jokingly asked Sayadaw U Wara how he felt seeing the (18th??) hole over the fence from the Sunlun Kyaung’s “Thein”. The new golf course was built for VIPs inside KabaAye, and that particular hole was seen from the “Thein” less than 40-50 yards, of course over the fence.

U Thet Lwin

He matriculated from St. Paul’s High School in 1957. His Burmese teacher was Saya U Sein.
After graduation, he joined the Burmese Department at the Institute of Economics. During the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the University of Rangoon in 1970, he served as Secretary of the subcommittee chaired by Saya Dr. Aung Gyi, then Professor of Civil Engineering at RIT.
One day, he was informed of a vacancy for Registrar at RIT where Sayagyi Dr. Aung Gyi was Rector (having succeeded Sayagyi U Yone Moe). The two sayas were reunited as co-workers at RIT.
His pen name is Ngwe Hlinne. He is an accomplished pianist and composer. He received several “Dat Pyas” from BBS (Burma Broadcasting Service) for his songs including “Mya Kyun Nyo Nyo Tekkatho”. He treated his Ah Nu Pyinnya Shins with the remuneration (he received for his songs, typically K100 per song).
He is the maternal uncle of U Sein Tin (EC74).

U Thet Lwin (EC78)

He worked for UCC (Universities’ Computer Center) and PTC(Post and Telecommunications Corporation) before going to Singapore and Thailand.
He is now back in Myanmar.

U Thet Lwin (Stats)

Dr. Thet Lwin taught Statistics at the Institute of Economics.

Wunna

It is a Pali word meaning means “good looking” (handsome, pretty, …).
It is one of the good karmic results along with Aryu (Longevity), Sukha (Happiness, pleasure, joy, bliss) and Bala (Strength) for doing meritorious deeds.

He was a Kayah Sawbwa.
He was a Minister in an AFPFL Government.

Sree Wunna Mangrai

She is a member of the Keng Tung Sawbwa family.
She is a niece of Saya Sao Kan Gyi (RIT English, GBNF), Sao Biddy (spouse of Sao Hso Holm), Sao Yan Naing and Sao Yan Paing.
She studied M.Sc. (Computer Science) at UCC.
She worked in Singapore.

He rowed for Ye Kyaung Lu Nge during his high school days.
He rowed for RIT and RUBC during his RIT days.
He also swam and played water polo for RIT.
He worked for DCA before moving to Thailand and USA.
He attended the first East Coast Reunion.

He is the son of Daw Khin Mar Mar (Physics, UCC) and the grand son of Saya U Net, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Mandalay.
He did further studies in Japan and the USA.
He created and maintained the second RIT web site.
