    • He is the lone surviving teacher from our times.

    • Later, practiced Catholicism for 10 years.
    • Finally became a Buddhist monk.

  • Garawa

    • It is a time honored tradition to pay respect to one’s parents, mentors and elders.
    • Garawa can be performed at any time.
    • Thadingyut is one occasion where most Burmese pay respect to their elders.
    • In our younger days, some come to our parent’s house with BOC candles, bananas, or token items of gratitude.
    • Several former students (mostly retired Professors) paid respect to Saya Dr. Soe Win (retired Rector of YUFL) and Sayama Daw May Saw Lwin (Chemistry).
    • Saya earlier missed the Puzaw Pwe of ICST/UCSY, since he was hospitalized for about 10 days.

    Dr. Soe Win wrote :

    It’s absolutely amazing how you put together your Trivia with accuracy, correct timing and up-to-date. It’s not enough to say you are a walking encyclopedia. I enjoy and benefited by your Trivias as do many others. Thank you.

  • Paing Brothers

    • ICS U Paing has four sons : Myo Paing, Soe Paing, Win Paing and Kyaw Paing.
    • They attended SPHS (St. Paul’s High School).
    • They are Champion Golfers.

    Dr. Myo Paing (SPHS54)

    • Medical doctor — BMRI
    • Early assignment was Malaria Campaign
    • Champion golfer.

    Saya U Soe Paing (SPHS56)

    • Stood 17th in the whole of Burma in Matriculation examination of 1956; Won Collegiate Scholarship
    • Received BSEE and MSEE from Stanford University
    • Joined the RIT EE Department as Assistant Lecturer.
    • Co-founded UCC with Dr. Chit Swe, U Myo Min and U Ko Ko Lay
    • Transferred to UCC as Systems Manager of Systems Division
    • Received M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Southampton University
    • Worked for UN projects in several countries.
    • Wrote “Computer Ah Sa UCC Ga” and his experiences as a States Scholar and UN Advisor.
    • Spent time playing golf and practicing vipassana meditation.
    • During his UCC days, he served as a Golf Correspondent.
      I helped him type about the competition at RGC and BGC and submit to the English newspapers.

    U Win Paing (SPHS64, GBNF)

    • Won several Golf Championships with his younger brother U Kyaw Paing.
    • After finishing the finals for Chemical Engineering examination in 1970, he became U Wara.
    • Served as Taik Oke for more than four decades.
    • Succeeded Sayadaw U Vinaya as the Chief Resident Monk of KabaAye Sunlun Gu Kyaung.

    • Represented Burma in the Putra Cup.
    • Lawyer and Entrepreneur.

    For number of years, I was the carrier-cum-postman to bring Saya Paing’s typed golf news to the WPD, Working Peoples’ Daily at Theingbyu Street! Just one of the chores I had in those days.
    I remember jokingly asked Sayadaw U Wara how he felt seeing the (18th??) hole over the fence from the Sunlun Kyaung’s “Thein”. The new golf course was built for VIPs inside KabaAye, and that particular hole was seen from the “Thein” less than 40-50 yards, of course over the fence.

  • Model

    A Physical Model is usually a scaled down version of a real-life entity.

    In our younger days, some schools and universities had Aero-modeling clubs.
    Ko Eddie (Edward Teoh, M64) helped run the Aero-modeling club.

    A Mathematical Model is a representation of an idea, concept, theory using Mathematics.
    It could be a simple equation (e.g. F = ma), a system of equations (linear, non-linear, differential, partial differential, …) or much more.

    A Computational Model leverages the power of computers.

    Many traditional subjects now have Computational aspect (or branch).
    Example : Computational Biology

    Models include

    • Probabilistic Model
    • Stochastic Model
    • Simulation Model (e.g. Discrete Event Simulation)
    • Neural Networks
    • Econometric Model

    ၂၀၂၂ ခုနှစ်အတွက်နောက်ဆုံးmini gathering ဖြစ်ပါသောကြောင့် အားလုံးစုံစုံညီညီတက်ရောက်၍ ကိုတင်ရွှေအတွက်ဆုမွန်ကောင်းများပို့သပေးကြရန်လည်း ထပ်ဆင့်အသိပေးနှိုးဆော် အပ်ပါသည်။

      Six are alive and well.
    • Met Ko Khin Maung Gyi, Ko Tin Win and Ko Win Thein Zaw at the 69er Gatherings.
    • Ko Tin Maung (Katha) was earlier listed in the 69er Address Book / Contact List as having moved to USA or Taiwan.
    • He was known for his shooting prowess in soccer, despite having a knee problem.
    • Ko Tin Maung Aye (M69) met him at the Tanyin Thabawa Yeiktha.

  • Dr. Pe Nyun

    Rangoon University was closed for three years during the war.

    When RU reopened in 1946, three children of U San Pe : Dick / Pe Nyun, Tom / Pe Thein and their older sister attended together.

    The two brothers represented RUBC (Rangoon University Boat Club) at the 1948 Independence Day Regatta at Kandawgyi and became RUBC Gold.

    U Pe Nyun (GBNF) served as Secretary and later as Captain of RUBC.

    He was Chief Pediatric Surgeon at Rangoon Children’s Hospital. He led the team that operated on Ma Nan Soe and Ma Nan San.

    After retirement, he moved to Canada.

    He is GBNF.

    U Pe Thein (GBNF) was Professor at the Institute of Medicine, and later Minister of Health and Education.

    ** Notes

    * The two are maternal uncles of Saya U Tu Myint (Winston, M), who taught at RIT and Singapore Polytechnic.

    * The other crew members are U Tin U (elder brother of Saya U Ba Than, Most Senior and Oldest Past Captain of RUBC) and U Khin Maung Wint (Bobby Tin, son of Architect U Tin).
