U Tin U’s Miracle
Brief Bio
- He matriculated in 1946 and attended Rangoon University. His classmates include Dr. Pe Nyun (Dick San Pe, GBNF) and Dr. Pe Thein (Tom San Pe, GBNF).
- He is the Most Senior & Oldest Past Captain of Rangoon University Boat Club (RUBC).
- He represented RUBC at the Independence Day Regatta held at Kandawgyi in 1948 and received Gold along with Dick San Pe, Tom San Pe and Bobby Tin.
- He received BSCE (Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering) from the University of Oregon and MSCE (Master of Science in Civil Engineering) from Yale University.
- He taught part-time at Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Rangoon University.
- He was Secretary of Burma Civil Engineering Society.
- He is Past Captain of Rangoon Golf Club (RGC).
U Tin U 90th Birthday
- On August 3, 2019, he celebrated his 90th birthday with a Soon Kyway at Dat Poung Zon Aung Min Gaung monastery, and with a sumptuous dinner at Winner Inn run by the family of Sayagyi U Ba Than (his younger brother, now GBNF).
- U Tin Htoon (A60, another younger brother) compiled a Photo Album Book highlighting U Tin U’s life and gave him as a birthday present.
- Min Ko (eldest grandson of U Tin U) had earlier recorded an interview with his “Pho Pho”.

Miracle?
The following account of the Kidnapping is recounted by Dr. Khin Tun (Peter Tin U, his eldest son, UK). Was it a series of coincidences or a miracle?
He had an experience of being kidnapped by his company driver who hired “insurgents” with criminal records, to do the job. They came to his office at Lewis street, and pretended to be from military intelligence in mufti. They asked him to come along with them for questioning. They asked the office driver to drive the company jeep up to A1 compound near 9th mile and let the driver to get off at a bus stop with a letter to give to my mother.
One of them took the driver seat and continued driving out of the city passing Mingaladon airport. When their jeep went past the Mingaladon Military Intelligence Centre (Yay Kyi Ine), my father became suspicious.
Luckily, there was a road block near Hmawbi, and the kidnappers tried and overtook the battle tanks in a convoy on the road. An off duty military police stopped the car, giving my father a chance to ask for help; my father reached the car key from the back seat and threw it away. The military police asked my father to drive instead and was later freed, after being taken to the military commander and the police station.
In the mean time my mother, who was doing research at Insein Railway Hospital, received a ransom letter at 11 am to bring 60,000 Kyats in a jute bag, wearing a red longyi to a road corner, near “Ar-lain-nga-sint” pagoda in “Mingaladon”, by 3 pm the same day.
The kidnappers’ plan was to torture and kill my father whether they received the ransom or not. The grudge was for sacking the driver who took sick leave, and went to work in another company to get two salaries.

Pauk Si Hla Min (CO, UCC)
CO (Back row, 2nd from Right) Nickname
He matriculated from St. Paul’s High School in 1964. His friends called him Pauk Si. His father lent money to a Pauk Si vendor who would not repay back in cash, so he ate Pauk Si as time and energy permitted.
Education & Experience
He graduated with Electrical Engineering in 1970.
He joined UCC as Chief Operator and was called CO.
He studied in the UK. He met his Daw Tin Win, who was attending Advanced Nurse Training.
Untimely Demise
He was healthy. He would often wear just sports shirt in the air-conditioned Computer Room.
He passed away unexpectedly in his mid-30s. His Paulian classmate Dr. Min Lwin examined him and found out the severity of CO’s medical condition.
Tone Kyaw
When CO passed away, two government training schools (where I had lectured) thought that I had passed away and offered to send me wreaths. U Moe Hein (Ajala, ChE69) took leave from work to attend my Last Journey.
Notes
- Hla Min (Pauk Si) and La Min (Lushwin Daw) are both Paulians and EE70.
- A young Hla Min (Ko Pauk) worked for U Win Htein (PWD, GBNF). He was injured while jumping on to a boat.
- Tone Kyaw = some one who is wrongly believed to have passed away.
- There are at least three Tone Kyaw.
- UnHan Sein (C69) became a Tone Kyaw when he was inadvertently listed in the GBNF List of 69ers. The compilers were unaware that he was sentenced 20 years by a Kangaroo Court. He was released after 17 years. He lost his family.
- Saya Dr. Tin Hlaing (M63, Singapore) became a Tone Kyaw when Dr. Tin Hlaing (Former Principal of Maritime studies) passed away in Singapore. Some RIT alumni wrongly posted the news.
- Emma Myint wrote : Such a waste of a talented man. my sis was weak in Maths. He taught her for 2 weeks and she got D. altogether she got 4 D.

Soul Mate
He found his love Margaret when he visited his former classmate and friend U Kyaw Sint (Edward Tai, T69er, Tennis & Soccer, GBNF) in Southern California. She is the younger sister of Elizabeth (GBNF, spouse of U Kyaw Sint) and a cousin of U Tun Aung (Jeffery, EC68, GBNF).
Long Separation
He moved to California, but spent most of his time working abroad (in Europe and Middle East). He came back home only for the breaks.
Since they are well off and did not have children, a suggestion to retire was made.
Final Trip
He agreed to retire, but his boss & friend asked him for a final trip to train / handover.
He passed away unexpectedly — before he could retire — on a Friday (which was Sabbath & Holiday in the country). His company tried its best to have his body flown back to California.
He was a Health Enthusiast and worked out daily. Kyaw Sint was also health conscious. Both were felled by Byadi ဗျာဓိ and Marana မရဏ. May they rest in peace.

ဟိုး ကျောင်းနေစအရွယ်တုန်းက သူငယ်ချင်းတချို့ကိုတော့ ကောင်းကောင်းမှတ်မိတဲ့သူကနဲနဲဘဲရှိပါတယ်။ကျန်တဲ့သူတွေကို မမှတ်မိဘူးဆိုတာကတော့ ကျမက St.Philomena’s Convent ကိုကျောင်းပြောင်းတက်ခဲ့ရလို့သာပါ။

Health Care Funds
U Aung Min (M69) is Chair of the 69er HCF (Health Care Fund). He regularly sends out monthly and quarterly reports including the list of GBNF.
U Aung Min The major donors of the 69er HCF include

69ers (mostly M69ers but also friends from other disciplines) usually have a Monthly Breakfast Gathering at Taw Win Hnin Si (Royal Rose). The gatherings also celebrate Birthdays and Anniversaries.

U Tin Swe (EE)
Name
His name is U Tin Swe (တင်ဆွေ).
He was wrongly called as U Tint Swe (တင့်ဆွေ), U Tin Shwe (တင်ရွှေ) and U Tin Shwe Gyi (တင်ရွှေကြီး)
EE Saya
He graduated in 1953. He joined EE Department as Assistant Lecturer.
He received Masters from the University of Michigan, USA.
Upon his return, he became a Lecturer.
EE Sayas Sports
He was a member of the Prome Hall Soccer team which won the Inter-Hall Tournament for three consecutive years. He was a star player.
Prome Hall Soccer He also played Tennis.
Computing
He was a Power User at UCC. He supervised Ko Aung Kyaw Pe (EP69) for his Master’s thesis. He worked with Power Distribution & Analysis programs. He also collaborated with his former students including Dr. San Oo (EP67).
Demise
In the early days, there were few Professorships. He passed away before the creation of separate EC and EP Departments.

Dr. Myo Paing (SPHS54)
- He is a medical doctor and researcher (at BMRI).
- His early assignment was Malaria Campaign.
- He is a Champion golfer.
U Soe Paing (SPHS56)
U Soe Paing - In the Matriculation exam of 1956, he stood 13th in Burma and won a Collegiate Scholarship.
- In 1958, he received two Gold medals : one for the Highest Total Marks for I.Sc (Combined) & another for Joint Highest Marks in Maths for I.Sc (Combined).
- While attending Engineering classes at RU, he received State Scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in the USA.
- He received BS and MS in EE (Electrical Engineering) from Stanford University.
- Upon his return, he joined the EE Department at RIT as Assistant Lecturer. He helped Sayagyi Dr. Chit Swe with the UCC project.
- He transferred to UCC as Manager of Systems Division.
- After reorganization, he also managed the Operations Division.
- He received an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Southampton in the UK.
- He taught CS courses at UCC. He co-authored Progrsmming Texts, Lecture Guides and Manuals with U Aung Zaw (GBNF) and me.
- He worked for UN projects in several countries.
- He wrote “Computer Ah Sa UCC Ga” and his experiences as a States Scholar and UN Advisor.
- After retirement, Saya spent time playing golf & practicing vipassana meditation.
- During his UCC days, he served as a Golf Correspondent. I helped him type about the competition at RGC (Rangoon Golf Club) and BGC (Burma Golf Club) and submit to the English newspapers.

For number of years, I was the carrier-cum-postman to bring Saya U Soe Paing’s typed golf news to the WPD, Working Peoples’ Daily at Theingbyu Street! Just one of the chores I had in those days.
I remember jokingly asked Sayadaw U Wara how he felt seeing the (18th??) hole over the fence from the Sunlun Kyaung’s “Thein”. The new golf course was built for VIPs inside Kabaaye, and that particular hole was seen from the “Thein” less than 40-50 yards, of course over the fence.

CPR can help save lives
- M72 batch is a closely knit group. They are known for their gentlemen acts as well as seemingly childish behavior.
They tease each other often testing the limits of patience.
To outsides, they appear to be quarreling. - Ko Tha Tun (M72) is from the class of 71, but he feels at home as a senior with the M72 group. At one M72 gathering, a medical condition struck Ko Tha Tun, but he survived due to the CPR skills of Ko Wynn Htain Oo (M72). The members also took him quickly to a clinic without waiting fo the ambulance.
Tha Tun Casualties
- Some casualties occur early in the morning. Most family members may be sleeping, sleepy or not alert to respond to emergency problems.
- Ko Soe Myint (M72, retired Pro-Rector of ICST) had a busy day visiting the Sun Lun Gu Kyaung twice and also taking rounds to see his nephew and niece with medical problems. He passed away at 3 AM. Ko Wynn Htain Oo thought out aloud if CPR could have saved Ko Soe Myint.
