  • U Than Tun (M70) worked for Defense Industries. We crossed out path a couple of times : during his visit to the USA and during my visit to Yangon (where he drove me home from a gathering of the Class of 70 & 71).
  • I first met Saya Dr. Than Tun (distinguished Historian) at the Recreation Center. My uncle introduced the Char Taik to Saya. He taught at the University of Rangoon and as a visiting Professor overseas (doing research and writing books in Japan, USA, …).

  • U Than Tun, father-in-law of Wynn Myint Aung (EC76), was an army officer (Captain) during the Japanese occupation. After Independence, he attended the University of Rangoon. He passed away recently in Frederick, Maryland, USA recently in his 90’s.

  • Thakin Than Tun was a founding member of BCP (Burma Communist Party). He served as Secretary of AFPFL (Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League). He attended several conferences overseas. Due to ideological differences and for going underground as Leader of the White Flag BCP, his early contributions to the struggle for Burma’s Independence are not covered in most history books.

  • U Thet Lwin taught Burmese at the Institute of Economics. During the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the University of Rangoon in 1970, Saya U Thet Lwin served as Secretary of a subcommittee chaired by Saya Dr. Aung Gyi, then Professor of Civil Engineering at RIT. One day, Saya U Thet Lwin was asked if he would like to become Register at RIT where Sayagyi Dr. Aung Gyi was Rector (having succeeded Sayagyi U Yone Moe). The rest is history. Saya’s pen name is Ngwe Hlinne. Saya is an accomplished pianist and composer. He received several “Dat Pyas” from BBS (Burma Broadcasting Service) for his songs including “Mya Kyun Nyo Nyo Kun Yeik Kho”. He treated his Ah Nu Pyinnya Shins with the remuneration (he received for his songs, typically K100 per song). Saya is the maternal uncle of U Sein Tin (EC74).
  • U Thet Lwin (EC78) worked for UCC and PTC before going to Singapore and Thailand. He is now back in Myanmar.

  • Maung Tin became known as Sayagyi U Pe Maung Tin (Burmese and Pali Scholar, and Principal).
  • Sithu U Tin succeeded Commodore Than Pe as the President of RUBC. When all schools except Medical and Engineering were closed in 1963, the Annual Regatta was cancelled citing security reasons. U Tin however decided to hold the 40th Anniversary Dinner at a hotel in Royal Lakes (Kandawgyi). U Tin, U Po Zon and U Tin Htoon (A60) had compiled the history of RUBC for the Souvenir Program.
  • Myanmar Ah Lin U Tin was owner and/or publisher of the Burmese newspaper.

  • Saya Dr. Tin Hlaing (M63) is a classmate of my elder brother. Saya is also known as “R” and “Byte” to distinguish from the senior U Tin Hlaing. He played soccer. He co-chaired SPZP 2002 held in Singapore. He became a “Tone Kyaw” when his namesake passed away.
  • Dr. Tin Hlaing taught Maritime Studies. When he passed away in Singapore, some RIT alumni thought that it was their Saya and notified their friends (wrongly).

  • Saya U Tin Htut (M60) is Past Captain and Gold of RUBC. He co-founded BASES in Southern California. He was an organizer of SPZP-2000 and the Financial Controller of the 2015 Alumni Reunion in Los Angeles. He came up to the San Francisco Bay Area several times to attend the activities of RIT Alumni International and NorCal RITAA. He donated K10 Lakhs to Swel Daw Yeik Foundation (SDYF) in January 2017.   • Dr. Tin Tun PhD, FRCP ( London), FRCP (Edin) molecular scientist, working in Malaysia, has the distinction of being Burma’s-only Visiting Scientist at the Royal Society of London. Although not a fellow he is regarded as one of the top molecular scientists. Fellows of the Royal Society were Isaac Newton and Stephen Hawkins. Sithu U Tin succeeded Commodore Than Pe as the President of RUBC. When all schools except Medical and Engineering were closed in 1963, the Annual Regatta was cancelled citing security reasons. U Tin however decided to hold the 40th Anniversary Dinner at a hotel in Royal Lakes (Kandawgyi). U Tin, U Po Zon and U Tin Htoon (A60) had compiled the history of RUBC for the Souvenir Program.

He served as a member of several delegations (in the quest for Burma’s Independence), a diplomat, a Brigadier in the Reserve Army, a minister and a journalist. Sadly, he became a victim of a bomb placed under his car in front of his office. His assassination in September 1948 remains a high profile “unsolved” mystery.

U Tin Tun (M69) was my classmate from Standard IV(D) at SPHS, I.Sc.(A) and RIT. He later taught Naval Architecture and Maritime subjects.

U Tin Tun (M71) is a pianist and host along with Daw Mar Mar Yee (M75) for the Singapore Pon-Chan-Chan gatherings.

Saya U Tin Oo Hlaing was Principal and Rector. He served as interpreter to Saddhamaransi Sayadaw during the dhamma duta mission to the USA.

U Tin Oo Thaung, son of Sandayar U Sein Thaung, played keyboard for bands including Playboy.

Saya U Tin Maung Oo (M67, GBNF) served as Assistant Superintendent of Workshop under Saya U Phone Myint.

There are several U Tin Myint. They include U Tin Myint (David, M67, entrepreneur and Golden Sponsor of SPZP), U Tin Myint (M69, RIT Table Tennis, GBNF), Saya U Tin Myint (M80).

There are several U Tin Shwe. They include Saya U Tin Shwe (EP66, RIT & ABAC, Saydaw after retirement, GBNF) and Dr. Tin Shwe (Leprosy Campaign, Author & Publisher).

Saya U Tin Swe (EE53) played soccer and tennis. He was a power user at UCC along with his former students Dr. San Oo (EP67), U Aung Kyaw Pe (EP69).

U Tin Htway (M59) switched to Civil after moving to the USA. He co-founded BASES with Saya U Tin Htut and David.

There are several Dr. Tin Win and U Tin Win. They include Dr. Tin Win (M62, Past President of BASES, core organizer of 2015 Alumni Reunion in Los Angeles), Dr. Tin Win (David Ba Htay, Chemistry), Dr. Tin Win (Alan De Santoz, Chemistry), Saya U Tin Win (M59, Bago), U Tin Win (Min69, host of 69er gatherings), U Tin Win (brother of U Willie Tun Shein [RUBC Gold]), John Tin Win (Principal, Co-op Training School), Saya U Tin Win (EC71), U Tin Win (Operator, UCC).

Thein

  • Dr. U Thein was Professor of Geology. He invited his former student Ko Soe Myint (UCC) and me to be guest speakers in MASU and in RASU.
  • U Thein (Zawana) is a journalist and author.

Thane is a variant spelling of Thein.

Thein Aung

  • Saya U Thein Aung taught at IE (Institute of Economics). He and Saya U Tin Nyunt taught IM (Industrial Management) at RIT.
  • Saya U Thein Aung (Micky, SPHS59) is RUBC Gold. He taught Physics at RASU before moving to private industry.
  • Saya Lay U Thein Aung (James, Met 72), a.k.a. Myo Daw, was a Mr RIT, and was a key member of the very first SPZP in 2000.
  • U Thein Aung (M72) is known for differentiating the two Thein Aung from the Class of 72. He said, “I am Set Hmu — Maung Thein Aung. He is Set Hmu Maung — Thein Aung.”

Thein Lwin

  • Saya U Thein Lwin (EE) studied for his MS at Lehigh University in the USA. He taught at RIT and Singapore Polytechnic. He was President of the RIT Badminton Association. The RIT team led by Sai Kham Pan (EP69, Burma Selected) won the Inter-Institute Trophy.
  • U Thein Lwin (Stanley, SPHS63) was a member of our group at SPHS.
  • Dr. Thein Lwin is a High School Luyechun at the Inlay Khaungdaing Camp

Thein Han

  • Saya U Thein Han (Zawgyi) co-founded Khit San Sar Pay. He was a student of Sayagyi U Pe Maung Tin. He was approached by the Burmese and English Departments to do Masters. He chose to study Library Science in the UK. He served as Chief Librarian of the Universities’ Central Library (UCL).
  • U Thein Han, my lone remaining uncle, worked as Systems Engineer at IBM in Rangoon before moving to the USA. He has shared some of his real-life stories.
  • Dr. Thein Han (IM 79er) owned a “Subway” Franchise.

Thein Htut

Dr. Thein Htut is RUBC Gold. He lives is Sydney, Australia.

  • U Thein Htut worked for UCC before moving to private industry.

  • A1 Thein Htut (Freddie, Sat Su, PBRS) is a movie actor and director. His older twin A1 Than Htut (Stanley, PBRS) is a movie director. They won several photo contests hosted by Myawaddy Magazine. Their younger brothers U Aung Myint (Bobby, Min70) and Sai Wunna acted in the “Thaman Kyar” movie directed by the twin brothers.

Thane Myint

Bohmu Thane Myint (BRS, DSA) is the elder son of U Kyaw Zaw and Sayama Daw Khin Khin Aye. He served in the Air Force, and in the Myanmar Delegation to the UN. He managed the Myanmar Olympic Team for Seoul Olympics in 1988.

Thane Myint wrote :

I am THANE MYINT. Originally the Myanmar voice of THEIN was spelled like shown in capitals. When a foreigner tried to say out my name spelled as THEIN, they almost always say out as “Thee” “Inn” not THEIN as a single word. So, in order to have my name to be said vocally as near as possible as it was intended to be, I took a piece from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. The “THANE” of “Glamis” and “Cawdor” as spelled there. Even then some people say it out as “THAN”. Anyway it is much nearer to what it ought to be uttered correctly. You can’t have it all.

Thane Oke

Dr. Thane Oke Kyaw Myint taught Pediatrics. He processed “Perinatal Survey” and other projects at UCC. He worked for UN in Bangladesh and Fiji before migrating to Australia. He was founder and moderator of AMIM (Alumni of Medical Institutes from Myanmar) Yahoo Group. His former colleagues and students published a book as a present for his 70th birthday.

Thein Oo

  • U Thein Oo (Ah Thay Lay) is an example of “Great men are short”. He taught at IE, UCC, DCS and ICST. He co-founded MCI and founded Ace. He plays table tennis, volleyball, and cards.
  • U Thein Oo Po Saw (Ernest) studied Nuclear Physics in the US. He headed the Physics Department at DSA. His younger brother U Nyi Khine Po Saw (Kenneth) was a saya at the RIT English department.

Thein Pe

  • U Thein Pe is better known as Thein Pe Myint (author and politician). He is the father of U Hantha Myint (EC70, NLD).
  • Thein Pe is the main fictional character in Collegian (College Ja Po) by Zawana U Thein.

Thein Swe

  • U Thein Swe (Daniel Bomya) is President of Theravada Buddhist Society of America. He is a core organizer for the Summa Dhamma Camp.

  • U Thein Naing (Patrick) is a member of the La Phet Yay Waing Group with Saya Allen Htay (C58, GBNF), Saya U Tin Maung Nyunt (M60), U Ko Ko Aye and U Hla Min. He wants to share his collection of books and CDs with dhamma friends.

There are several Tin Maung Aye. They include U Tin Maung Aye (M69, Accordion), Dr. Tin Maung Aye (Physics), Thura Tin Maung Aye (Retired Air Force Colonel).

U Tin Han was Burma Soccer Selected. Grapevine says that his power play caused an early ending soccer career for U Kyaw Sint (T70, Burma Junior Champion in Tennis).

U Tin Nyein worked at UCC and Port Corporation.

U Tin Shein (Phone Gyi, M69) represented RIT in Chinlon.

There are several Tin Htut. They include U Tin Htut (M69), U Tin Htut (Harry, “Mon Yu”, M69), Saya U Tin Htut (M60), Saya U Tin Htut (Commerce).

Jennifer Tin Lay was Javelin Champion and Sports Coach.

U Tin Maung Lay (M69, GBNF) lived in the USA but mostly worked abroad. His spouse, who is a cousin sister of U Tun Aung (Jeffrey, EC68), requested him to retire. He agreed, but his boss asked him to stay on a last assignment to transfer knowledge. He passed away on a Friday (religious holiday). His company and friends took extra care to ensure that his body could be flown back to Los Angeles.

U Tin Aung Hein was a high ranking figure during the BSPP regime.

U Tin Aye is Burma selected in soccer. Daw Tin Aye (C73) played volleyball for Civil and/or RIT. M. Tin Aye is an outstanding artist.

A couple of Tin Tin Aye [or Tyn Tyn Aye] studied at UCC. One migrated to the USA. The other co-founded KMD with U Thaung Tin (EC83).

(1) Thynn Thynn Khaing (Janet Aung, EP70) was a Belle and the envy of young sayas and several junior and senior students. Her father U Soe Aung is a contemporary of Sayagyi U Kyaw Tun (EE), U Po Han, and U Min Han. She retired from United Nations. She volunteered as an organizer for the RIT-UCC Reunion held at Ivan’s residence in New Jersey.

(2) Thynn Thynn (Pansy, ChE74) is the daughter of Sayagyi U Ba Toke. During one of visits to Yangon, she sent a car to pick up Sayagyi U Ba Than, Saya U Tin Htut and me to pay respect to Sayagyi U Ba Toke.

(3) Dr. Thynn Thynn Lynn is the elder sister of Daw Kyu Kyu Lin (Bawlone, T75) and Dr San Lwin Lin (EC77). She was selected Luyechun several times. She is a Past President of USBMA. She is an accomplished vocalist.

(4) Dr. Thynn Thynn taught at IM(1). She accompanied her spouse Dr. San Lin (C62) to Thailand. While Dr. San Lin worked on a UN assignment, Dr. Daw Thynn Thynn organized a small group to study and practice meditation. Later, she founded Sae Taw Win 2 Dhamma Center in Sebastopol, California, USA. She taught Abhidhamma and “Mindfulness in Daily Life”. She published a couple of books.
