In June 2016, I had the honor to serve as Master of Ceremonies at the Memorial Service for Sayadaw U Silananda at the Duggan Mortuary in Daly City, U.S.A.
Sayadaw was 78 years old with 58 Vasa. He was then Rector of IMBTU in Myanmar, Chief Resident Sayadaw of Dhammananda Vihara in Half Moon Bay, and Ovadaciraya Sayadaw at several monasteries.
Over 50 Theravada Sayadaws from US, UK amd Myanmar were present at Sayadaw U Silananda’s Last Journey.
IMBTU was represented by Sayadaw U Nandamalabhivamsa (Pro-Rector, Academic) and a Pro-Rector from Admin.
Sitagu Sayadaw flew in from Myanmar and gave a heart rendering eulogy : “The Sun that rose in the East has set in the West”.
Theravada Buddhist Society of America (TBSA) published a 2-set DVD of Sayadaw’s Last Journey.
Chapter 7 of Disk 1 & Chapter 2 of Disk 2 covers the eulogies.
Saya U Myat Htoo (C 68), President of Theravada Buddhist Society of America (TBSA) led the procession for the “Ash Scattering Ceremony (San Francisco Bay, USA”. While Saya drove to the Golden Gate Bridge, I sat beside him and carried the box containing the Sayadaw’s ashes.
