Ko Maung Maung Kyi was named after his parents : U Maung Maung (a medical doctor) and Daw Kyi Kyi. He was the eldest of eight siblings.
We were classmates at SPHS (St. Paul’s High School). He was my best friend. Ko Maung Maung Kyi stood 11th in Burma in the Matriculation of 1963 and won a Collegiate Scholarship of 75 kyats a month.
We attended I.Sc.(A).
We rowed as crew mates at RUBC (Rangoon University Boat Club). Ko Myint Soe (Willie Soe Maung, GBNF) was Stroke of our Novice crew. Ko Kyaw Wynn (cousin of Saya U Tin Htut) rowed as No. (3). I rowed as No. (2). Ko Maung Maung Kyi was Bow. Ko Myint Thein (SPHS62) was our Cox. We were awarded Full Green.
The Universities were closed following the first Anniversary celebration of 7th July.
Ko Maung Maung Kyi and Ko Kyaw Wynn accepted Scholarship to study Engineering in Germany. Ko Maung Maung Kyi specialized in Pulp and Paper as part of his Chemical Engineering studies.
After his return, Ko Maung Maung Kyi worked for Sittang Paper Mill and PCIC. He found his soul mate.
Ko Maung Maung Kyi was a Best Man at our wedding along with my cousin Ko Thaung Lwin (EC66).
Ko Maung Maung Kyi and Ma Khin May Than migrated to Wales in the United Kingdom.
Both their sons became Medical doctors. Rimon, their elder son, became a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force. He led Rescue Teams.
A few years back, they lost Rimon in an avalanche. The Royal Air Force (RAF) notified Ko Maung Maung Kyi and Ma Khin May Than who were on the way to visit Myanmar. They heard the sad news a short time after they had landed in Yangon, and had to hurry back to the UK for their son’s last journey.
After that, Ko Maung Maung Kyi rarely spoke and smiled. Ma Khin May Than painted and took walks twice a day to ease the aches and pains.
They decided to give their house to their second son, also a medical doctor who had spent time in Japan and had decided to come back to see his parents.
Trip to UK
In September 2017, we visited the United Kingdom. My previous visit was in 1972.
My cousin nephew Dr. Khin Tun (Peter) and his spouse Daw Win Mar hosted us with sumptuous dinner almost every day. They both loved cooking.
They also drove us to Southern Wales to visit Ko Maung Maung Kyi (Dip Ing) and his spouse Ma Khin May Than (ChE72) at their new house at Ogmore by the sea.
The short but memorable reunion brought back smiles to Ko Maung Maung Kyi.
