The list is not exhaustive.

Prefix

Monk names may be prefixed with one or more of the following :

  • Bhikkhu
  • Ashin
  • Baddhanta
  • Sayadaw
  • Sayadawgyi
  • Upazin
  • Uzin
  • U
  • Thera
  • Maha Thera
  • Venerable
  • Achan (used in Thailand)

Suffix

Monk names may be suffixed with one or more of the following :

  • Lankara (one who had passed the Lankara dhamma exam as a novice)
  • [A]bhivamsa” (one who had passed the “Set kyar thi ha Dhammacariya” examination before the age of 26)
  • Wun tha ka (one who stood first in the above examination [or equivalent])
  • Pa hta ma gyaw (one who stood first in the “Pa hta Ma Pyan” examination)
  • Thi ro ma ni (one who finished 9 “kyans” in a single year)

Title

Some monks may highlight their accomplishments

  • Dhammacariya (dhamma lecturer)
  • Thamane Kyaw (one who stood first in the Lankara examination)
  • Pali Paragu (one who completed the examination in Pali)
  • Agga Maha Pandita (senior sage)
  • Tipitaka Dara (one who completed Three Baskets — “Vinaya”, “Sutta”, and “Abhidhamma” examinations)
  • Dwee Pitaka Dara (one who completed two of the the Three Baskets)
  • [informal] “Ta Pone Saung” (one who completed One Basket)
  • [informal] “Hna Pone Khwair” (one who completed “Vinaya”, “Sutta” and the first part of “Abhidhamma” examinations)

U Vicittasarabhivamsa

In the mid-50s, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized Sayadaw’s feat of reciting 8000+ pages of the Pali Canon.
