Terms (790) : Tipitaka

Tipitaka is commonly rendered as “Three Baskets”. It comprises of

  • Vinaya — Monastic rules of conduct
  • Sutta — Discourses
  • Abhidhamma — Ultimate Reality

First Buddhist Council

  • was held three months after the Maha Pari Nibanna (demise of Buddha)
  • Ashin Maha Kassapa acted as the Questioner
  • Ashin Upali recited Vinaya
  • Ashin Ananda recited Sutta and Abhidhamma
  • Five hundred Arahants confirmed Buddha’s teachings

Sixth Buddhist Council

  • was held at Kaba Aye (World Peace Pagoda) in Rangoon from 1954 to 1956
  • Mahasi Sayadaw acted as the Questioner
  • Mingun Sayadaw Ashin Vicittacarabhimvamsa recited Vinaya, Sutta and Abhidhamma
  • 2500 Sayadaws from Burma and neighboring Theravada Buddhist nations re-confirmed Buddha’s teachings
  • The Council approved texts were printed. Selected texts were translated into Burmese
  • Mingun Sayadaw’s memory feat was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records (in the mid-50s).
