Koon Yin Chu (Phillip, SPHS54, A60) stood first in Burma in the Matriculation of 1954.


An Old Paulian crew won the Senior Novices at RUBC (Rangoon University Boat Club).

  • Sao Hso Holm (B)
  • Than Nyunt (2)
  • M. Hla Min (3)
  • Tun Shein (S)
  • Tin Htut (Cox)

Four of the team members later represented RUBC and received Gold.

  • Saya U Tin Htut is Past Captain and RUBC Gold.
  • U Tun Shein (Willie) is RUBC Gold.
  • Dr. Than Nyunt (George) is Past Captain and RUBC Gold.
  • Saya M. Hla Min is RUBC Gold. He taught at SPHS.
  • Sao Hso Holm (Sawbwalay) received English Honors (First Class) and studied Law. He retired from UN. He is the son of Arzanee Sao San Htun.

Sixth Buddhist Council

  • The Sixth Buddhist Council was held at the Kaba Aye Pagoda.
  • 2500 Sayadaws from Burma and neighboring Theravada countries attended the Council.
  • Mahasi Sayadaw served as the Chief Questioner.
  • Mingun Tipitaka Sayadaw responded and elaborated on the questions.
  • Mingun Sayadaw was mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records for his phenomenal memory.
